Comfort gets comfortable win at Karnes City, 49-7
Comfort High was trailing in the middle of the second quarter, 7-6, at Karnes City, but something clicked after that for the Bobcats as they scored the next 43 points to record the 49-7 win.
Comfort remains perfect in district at 3-0 and improves to 4-3 overall. The Bobcats are home Friday to host Dilley.
Comfort struck quickly in Friday’s game after Mason West took the opening kickoff 73 yards for a score and put the Bobcats on the board just 17 seconds into the contest.
Comfort went for the 2-point try but didn’t convert on a running play, and their lead stood at 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Karnes City recorded its only touchdown of the contest midway through the second stanza on a 5-yard Charlie Foley gallop and the Badgers were up 7-6 after kicking the extra point with 6:18 until halftime.
After that it was all Comfort as they scored the next 43 points. Gio Lopez put the Bobcats on top after he scooted 58 yards into the end zone for a rushing touchdown. The lead stood at 12-7 after another failed 2-point try.
Israel Lopez set up Comfort’s next score after he intercepted a pass and returned it 51 yards to give the Bobcats offense a short field.
Topper Sterling took it from there and scored on a 1-yard carry and it was 18-9 going into the break after Comfort failed on its third 2-point try of the game.
Sterling tallied the first TD of the second half on an 11-yard run and this time the Bobcats kicked the extra point to boost the lead to 25-9.
Comfort’s defense forced another turnover as the Bobcats recovered a fumble that set up the offense in great shape again.
This time Gio Lopez carried the rock into the end zone on a 7-yard jaunt and the Bobcat lead was 32-7 with 7:29 left in the third quarter.
Late in the stanza, Sterling ripped off a 51-yard touchdown run and Comfort entered the fourth quarter with a comfortable 39-7 advantage.
The Bobcats tallied the final 10 points of the game in the final period. Jared Valadez recorded a 17-yard touchdown run early in the fourth and then Julio Lopez-Torres booted a 29-yard field goal to round out the scoring at 49-7.
Comfort quarterback Micah Nye left the game in the first half with an injury and did return.
