Thunderbirds hand Chargers first loss of season
SAN ANTONIO – Wagner’s running game downed Boerne Champion Friday at D.W. Rutledge Stadium.
Four of the Thunderbirds’ five scores came on running plays as Wagner defeated the Chargers, 34-21.
Champion’s loss was their first of the season after having won their first six games.
Wagner used the longest run of the night, a 74-yarder by Cameron Smith at the 11:03 mark in the third quarter, to begin to pull away from Champion. Smith’s TD run and the point-after gave the Thunderbirds a 27-14 lead.
Boerne Champion Quarterback Jordan Ballin plowed into the end zone from 3 yards out with 7:28 left to play, to cut the Chargers’ deficit to 27-21.
Boerne Champion had recovered a fumbled pitch toss on Wagner’s previous possession to set up its scoring drive.
But Wagner extended its lead to 34-21 and sealed the game at the 1:39 mark in the fourth quarter when Williams Reynolds punched in a 3-yard score.
Wagner took a 21-14 lead into the half after Juan’yae Taylor scored on a 6-yard run with 20 seconds left in the second quarter.
Boerne Champion last held a lead in the game when running back Cole Riha punched in a 1-yard score to give the Charger a 14-7 lead at the 2:49 mark in the second quarter.
Wagner did not take long to respond as Kevon Carter hauled in a 78-yard pitch to tie the game at 14-14 at the 2:31 mark.
Boerne Champion will look to get back on the winning track when they host Smithson Valley on Oct. 20. They’ll enter that contest at 6-1 overall and 3-1 in district.
Despite receiving its first loss of the season, Charger Coach Blane Ellis said he was proud of his team for competing for all four quarters.
“They fought ‘til the end,” he said. “That is true of my guys all the time.”
