Greyhounds mash Minutemen at Boerne ISD Stadium

Boerne High scored just about every way possible during Friday’s district contest at Boerne ISD Stadium against the Memorial Minutemen.

The Greyhounds found the end zone with three rushing touchdowns, had another through the air, came up with a defensive TD and then scored one with its special teams on a kickoff return.

The end result was an efficient 42-0 win to stay undefeated in district play at 2-0. BHS improves to 6-1 overall and is home Friday for a 7 p.m. contest against the Kennedy Rockets.

Boerne High entered the contest as heavy favorites but one of the players, Hutson Hendrix, said in games like that, they just have to focus on themselves.

“We worry about ourselves; we just have to play to our standards and play how we normally play,” he said.

It was Hendrix that recorded the defensive touchdown in the first quarter to help pad the Boerne lead.

Memorial had the ball at their own 13-yard line and tried to run the ball up the middle. Boerne linebacker Ryan Hooper popped the ball loose from the running back and it fell in front of Hendrix who scooped it up and took it into the end zone.

“Ryan Hooper shot the gap and got the ball out and it just fell into my hands, and I took it into the end zone,” Hendrix said. “Shout out to Ryan, it was awesome, it was nice.”

Before the Hendrix defensive TD, Boerne scored on its first two possessions after T.J. Dement capped their opening drive with a 5-yard sprint into the end zone.

On the Greyhounds’ next possession, Hank Hendrix kept the ball and scored on a quarterback dive for the 14-0 lead after the Carson Cooper extra point at the 5:15 mark of the opening period.

The Hutson Hendrix defensive score made it 21-0 and the game was still in the first quarter and the Minutemen didn’t even have a first down yet.

A fumble late in the first quarter cost Boerne another chance at a score, but Dement bumped the lead to 28-0 in the second stanza with a 6-yard scramble into the end zone to cap a 6-play, 73-yard drive.

Memorial finished the first half with five punts, a fumble and gave the ball back on loss of downs after they went for it on 4th down and didn’t convert.

But the Minutemen mixed in a few positive plays and at one point in the half, took the ball to the Boerne 30-yard line after a nice 33-yard run by Jesse Nava for their best drive of the night.

The Greyhounds received the kickoff in the second half and McCoy Bruce took it 70 yards for a touchdown and the lead was 35-0 to start the third quarter.

Memorial had to punt on its first possession of the second half but did manage a 53-yard punt that pinned the Greyhounds back at their own 26. But BHS responded with a 74-yard drive and scored in just four plays.

Hank Hendrix found Matthew Garrison on a 34-yard scoring strike to make it 42-0, Boerne’s only passing TD of the night.

The clock basically turned into a running clock in the second half and even when there was a change of possession, the seconds were still ticking off the clock.

There were basically only six combined possessions between the teams in the second half and Boerne scored on two of them.

The game was over before 9 p.m., and the Boerne defense had pitched its first shutout of the season.

BHS was on the road for five of its first six games, followed by a threegame home stand that included Friday’s game with the Minutemen.

Hutson Hendrix said he likes how the team is playing as they head down the stretch.

“I think we’re starting to roll. We’re meshing really well as a team right now and I think we’re in a good spot,” he said. “We just have to play our game, play smash-mouth football and whatever happens, happens.”
