Shaping up to be a November to remember in Comfort

ROSE BURCKHARDT

Certain seasons and times of the year bring not only their respective holidays, but also traditions that live on -- often longer than some memories can recall.

November in Comfort is one such month, when celebrations just keep coming. But before we venture down that road, we’ll take a moment to brag a bit about the Comfort Heritage Foundation Tour of Homes, which took place October 21.

Texas towns share one notable trait: history. Perhaps that’s true of nearly all communities; it’s just that some cherish their roots and others don’t as much.

Old buildings may be considered obsolete and are razed to make way for whatever is in vogue at the time. Not so in Comfort.

Every two years, the Comfort Heritage Foundation does its homework to find roughly a halfdozen places of historical value to highlight on the Tour of Homes. It’s a lovely way to spend an afternoon, and last Saturday proved to be the perfect day to tour. And our visitors were also able to enjoy a multitude of creatively designed and executed scarecrows.

If you missed this one, not to worry. In a couple years there will be another, thanks to the many wonderful volunteers at the Heritage Foundation and the agreeable homeowners in Comfort. Now, onto November. First on the calendar is the Christmas Extravaganza put on by The 8th Street Market, and set for Tuesday, November 7, from 5-8 p.m. You will find this already amazing place decked out in lights, with seasonal music and wonderful things to eat and drink.

What a nice way to thank customers and community members for their support. If you aren’t familiar with The 8th Street Market, do come on over. Located at 523 Eighth St., the building houses vendors who specialize in quality antiques, vintage items and collectables.

Saturday, November 11, is another big day in Comfort. America Reclaimed (810 Avenue A) will hold its second anniversary celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The lineup includes live music, food, wine tastings, even cigars, plus raffles, games and fun activities for all. You may want to check their schedule for particular times and events. It should be a lot of fun.

Also, on November 11 is the annual Diva Day. A long-standing tradition, Diva Day is a great opportunity for all the divas to enjoy strolling through the streets of the Downtown Historic District.

Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., local shops will be ready for them, with new items for Christmas shopping, along with yummy delectables to make you ask for just a little bit more, please.

Close on the tails of Diva Day is the annual Girls Night Out -- an evening opportunity to experience the delights of Comfort’s Historic District, our unique shops, lights and all that goes along with Christmas shopping.

Girls Night Out takes place Tuesday, November 14, from 4-9 p.m. Mark your calendars and plan to attend.

And last, but certainly not least, we cannot fail to mention Christmas in Comfort, the greatest day of the year in our little community.

This will be the 37th celebration, and will take place on Saturday, November 25 -- always the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

The event is lining up to be filled with arts and crafts vendors, your favorite food vendors, plus some new offerings, great live entertainment, Santa at his very best, a wonderful nighttime lighted parade, and fireworks to top off the event.

So plan to make at least one visit to Comfort this November, if not two or three or more. Remember that you can always find Comfort in Texas!
