Champion defeats Unicorns in tennis

Champion defeats Unicorns in tennis

The Boerne Champion tennis team continued district play Tuesday with a home match against New Braunfels at the Boerne High courts.

The Unicorns are coming down from the 6A ranks to play in 5A this year, but the Chargers were still able to handle the Unicorns, 13-3.

Despite the lopsided score, Champion coach Joey Cantu said they had to gut out some matches.

“They were very competitive,” said Cantu, who is closing in on 400 career wins. “We won several super tiebreakers.”

Champion is 7-4 overall and 5-1 in district. The Chargers were scheduled to play San Angelo Central this weekend in a non-district match before resuming district action Tuesday against Wagner at the BHS courts, 4:30 p.m.

Boerne High

After playing at Alamo Heights last week, the Greyhounds have enjoyed a little down time for about 10 days and will be back at it Sept. 23 with a match at Pieper, 4 p.m.

The Hounds are 10-3 overall and 3-2 in district and have dropped their last two matches to Champion and Alamo Heights.
