The Boerne Champion girls basketball team opened district action Friday night by hosting Veterans Memorial. Champion is off to a fast start this year and their solid season continued Friday with a 73-34 victory over the Lady Patriots.

The Chargers are 1-0 in 26-5A and 9-1 overall. Champion visited Smithson Valley Tuesday as they continued league play. After that, they are off until Dec. 3, when they travel to New Braunfels Canyon for a non-district contest.

In last Friday’s game, the Chargers were up 19-12 at the end of the first quarter and then took the second stanza, 17-14, for the 36-26 halftime lead.

Champion started to pull away with a strong second half and tallied 17 in the third and closed it out with their best-scoring quarter of the night after they netted 20 in the fourth.

The Patriots faded in the third and fourth periods and only managed 4 points in the final two quarters for 8 second-half points.

Addison Darter was hot from the outside and drained six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points, Jenna Koepke knocked in a pair of 3s and tallied 12 points, while Hailey Winn and Brielle Burdick scored 11 points each as the Chargers had four in double figures.

Burdick also hit a 3 as the team finished with 9 longrange shots. Abby Sommer scored 4 points, Kam Edwards netted 3, while Lorena Barreiro, Taylor Burk, Savannah Wayment and Emma Lee all chipped in with 2 points.
