This is where he met and married the love of his life, Charlotte Holmes, in 1960, and they settled in Van Horn, Texas, to begin their married life and start a family.

Alan was an entrepreneur and businessman at heart, and over the course of his professional life in West Texas, he owned car dealerships in Van Horn and Alpine, Texas, and owned a Rodeway Inn in Van Horn, Texas.

In the late 1980s, Alan and Charlotte moved to the Hill Country where they lived and eventually retired in Boerne, Texas. Alan owned a mini storage business in addition to helping Charlotte manage and maintain numerous apartment developments in the Boerne area.

Alan is survived by two sons, Alan Hassenflu Jr. and his wife, Cherie, of Houston, and Scott Hassenflu and his partner, Jonathan Marquardt, of Sacramento, California; three grandchildren, Stephen and his wife, Jaca, Kevin and Heather; and one great-grandson, Hans. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte; youngest son Eric; his parents; and two older siblings.
