A republic, if you can keep it
A republic, if you can keep it
Upon exiting the Constitutional Convent of 1787 in Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin was asked by an anxious inquisitor, “Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?” Franklin is said to have replied, “A republic, if you can keep it?” 03/19/2023 12:00 AM

Abbott lays out seven top priorities
Gov. Greg Abbott, in a State of the State address last Thursday, outlined his seven top priorities for the ongoing legislative session before an invitation-only audience at a manufacturing facility in San Marcos, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Those priorities include $4 billion for border security, property tax relief and more school choice for parents, which he called “education freedom.” He avoided use of the word “vouchers.’ 02/22/2023 12:00 AM

During the Christmas season, I was in conversations where the topic of Jesus and politics came up. At first, it was an uncomfortable place, and my initial reaction was, really? Can’t we enjoy the season without involving politics? However, the idea, the concept of Jesus related to politics, or vice versa, intrigued me enough to consider if there was a deeper and perhaps indeed a contemporary meaning, because ultimately, it seems to me, the deepest issues facing humanity are spiritual in nature and will require spiritual solutions. 01/08/2023 12:00 AM

He always told me voting wasn’t just about election day, it was about what goes on before and after that, and he encouraged me to understand the process. 10/30/2022 12:00 AM

Vaccine skeptics might walk a mile in polio sufferers’ shoes
If you want to understand the impact of polio -- if you want to comprehend the heartbreak polio victims feel about the return of infantile paralysis -- if you want to sense the bewilderment that polio victims feel about vaccine skepticism -- then walk a mile in Stacy Smith’s shoes. 10/02/2022 12:00 AM

Our first and greatest responsibility
You probably know people who complain about the state of our country, or our state, or county, or city. Yes, there is a lot to be irritated about, but is it enough to just store up that frustration or can we get the complainers to take the next step toward a solution? 10/02/2022 12:00 AM
