Hope for Heroes Texas CEO Brad Cornell recognized three first responders from Austin and San Antonio law enforcement with Boerne appreciation packages on Saturday morning at the Bevy hotel. Cornell has been honoring area first responders for months through his nonprofit organization as he welcomes them and their families to Boerne for special presentations that are attended by dozens of local residents, who also show their appreciation through hearty applause. On Saturday, Cornell, pictured wearing the cowboy hat, recognized Jacob with the San Antonio Police Department, left, Javier from the Austin PD, center, and Julius from Austin PD. Cornell said he does not give out the first responders’ last names because oftentimes they work undercover. Star photos by Zachary-Taylor Wright 01/18/2022 12:00 AM

Boerne teenager Maddie Barber earned $30,500 at the 2022 Kendall County Junior Livestock Show and Sale last week after she showed several pigs – two Yorks, a Duroc and a Cross – during the January 4 swine show. Barber, a junior at Champion High School, said she is donating all her earnings to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, where she was treated for brain cancer from 2017-18. Barber was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma and has been cancer-free since 2018. She committed to donating 100 percent of her sale donations to St. Jude to help future children get treatment and enable them to pursue activities they enjoy. Barber is an FFA officer and a National Honor Society member at Champion. Photos courtesy of BISD 01/14/2022 12:00 AM
