Lady Chargers tangle with Smithson Valley

The Smithson Valley softball team tallied 12 runs in one inning and went on to defeat Boerne Champion Tuesday night, 14-1, in five.

Champion slips to 5-8 overall and 3-7 in district. The Lady Chargers are off Friday and visit Alamo Heights this coming Tuesday.

Last Tuesday’s contest was close early and the Rangers took a 2-0 lead into third and busted it open from there.

Smithson Valley batted 16 in the bottom of the third inning. They used 5 walks, 4 singles, 2 errors and a triple to score its 12 runs.

Champion scored its only run in the top of the fourth. Abby Brehmer walked, Mylie Parker made it on base thanks to an error and then Hannah Perez reached on a fielder’s choice. Lilly Ritchie grounded out and but brought in Brehmer from third.

The next two Charger batters went down swinging to end the inning with the Lady Rangers up, 14-1. Smithson Valley didn’t score in the bottom of the fourth, and after Champion didn’t score in the fifth, the game ended.

Torin Tucker recorded the team’s only hit, Brehmer scored the only run and Ritchie picked up an RBI. Brehmer also took 2 walks.

Parker started in the circle and went 2.2 innings. She gave up 6 hits, 5 earned runs, 5 walks and struck out 3.

Anna Hurst tossed the final 1.1 frames and yielded 2 hits, no earned runs and fanned 2.
