The Boerne Greyhounds clinched their sixth district title in seven years, bringing a hard-fought 28-17-win home from New Braunfels Friday.

The undefeated Greyhounds (9-0, 5-0 in District 13-5A DII) wrap up the regular season Nov. 6 hosting the Legacy Ranch Wranglers at Boerne ISD Stadium.

Boerne opened the scoring on a trick play. Boerne ran a double reverse that saw quarterback Grant Sweeney sneak out of the backfield and scoot down the sidelines. Receiver Jacob Hicks took the ball on the second reverse and hit Sweeney for a 63-yard scoring play late in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

Another trick play may have been the turning point in the game. Up 21-17 early in the fourth quarter, Boerne faced a fourth-and-13 at the New Braunfels 37-yard line. Sweeney dropped back to punt, but then ran up, took the snap and lofted a pass to Hicks that was good for 17 yards and a first down. Three plays later tight end Beau Dayoc caught a 1-yard pass for a score and a 28-17 lead that the Boerne defense made stand for the win.

Up 7-0, the teams traded touchdowns on their next possessions. The Unicorns (1-8, 0-5) went 75 yards in 13 plays, tying the score at 7 on a 1-yard run by backup quarterback Kane Bunch at the 8:48 mark.

Boerne promptly responded when Sweeney hit receiver Zach Freasier in the back of the end zone from 13 yards for a 14-7 lead.

New Braunfels kicker Josh Hinton hit a 50-yard field goal 26 seconds before halftime to trim the lead to 14-10 at the break.

The second half opened with the Unicorns driving 60 yards in 12 plays for a Bunch 3-yard TD run, taking the lead for the first time at 17-14.hit

But 36 seconds later, the lead evaporated when Sweeney connected with receiver Lane Aaron of a 44-yard TD pass and a 21-17 lead.

The final score was Dayoc’s TD catch at the 9-minute mark for the 28-17 final.

Sweeney, though only 9 of 17 passing for 135 yards, went over 2,000 yards passing on the season. His three TD passes gave him 32 on the season against only three interceptions thrown.

Running back Callen Combs topped the 1,000-yard mark in rushing for the season.
