Champion turns in four 1st-place finishes at Area track and field meet

NEW BRAUNFELS – The Boerne Champion track and field boys team recorded four 1st-place finishes at last week’s Area meet to qualify for regionals, while the girls advanced its 4x100 relay to regionals as well.

The Region IV-5A meet is set for this weekend at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.

The top two at regionals advance to the state meet, while the third-place finishers have a chance at a wildcard spot.

Varsity Boys

The Chargers had a solid meet and placed 5th with 53 points and had four 1st-place finishes.

Champion scored 30 of those points in distance running, with three of their first-place finishes.

Charlie Houck won two races for 20 points after he took the 3200 with a time of 9:21.14 and also captured 1st in the 1600 after the senior ran a 4:27.02.

Caleb Dehart was another Charger with a 1st-place finish after he topped the field in the 800 after running a 1:54.29.

Jamarri Bowie also joined the 1st-place party after he won the 400 in a time of 48.16, while Bowie also picked up another point after he was 6th in the 200 after posting a 23.71.

Blake Stehling threw the shot put a distance of 52-10.25 for 4th to advance to regionals, while Stehling also came in 5th in the discus with a toss of 150-2 to combine for 6 more points.

Landon Kolacny picked up 2 team points after he placed 5th in the pole vault by clearing 14-6.

Champion’s 4x100 relay of Juan Nava, Cal Isley, Brogan Dempsey and Zach Garcia teamed up for 5th with a time of 42.24 for 4 points to round out the scoring.

Varsity Girls

The Lady Chargers placed 11th with 16 points and advanced a relay team to regionals.

Champion earned half of their points in the 4x100 relay after Holly Winkenhower, Kinsley Graff, Juliana Syroney and Madison Meinke teamed up for 4th with a time of 48.31 for 8 points.

Rebecca Bezerra finished 5th in the 3200 after the freshman posted an 11:27.49 for 2 team points, while another freshman, Payton Kidder, was 6th in the 1600 after she ran a 5:27.13 for a point.

Kidder also came in 6th in the 800 with a time of 2:21.63, for another point.

Hannah Burkett finished 5th in the discus with a toss of 104-0 for 2 points and Juliana Syroney placed 5th in the 100meter dash after posting a 12.65 for 2 points.
