The Comfort and Florence softball teams met Monday in Blanco to break their fourth-place tie and decide which team would claim the final playoff spot up for grabs in their district.
Comfort and Florence both finished league play at 3-7 and had split their two games, with each winning at home via run-rule victories.
The rubber match went to Florence after the Lady Buffs recorded the 15-10 victory Monday in Blanco to end the Comfort season. The Deer conclude 2025 at 6-20 overall.
It was a tough-luck loss for the Deer after they outhit Florence, 11-7, but committed 8 errors.
Four of those errors occurred in the second inning when Florence tallied 8 runs for the 8-0 advantage. Comfort responded in the bottom half of the frame and cut the lead in half, 8-4, after they took advantage of two Florence errors.
Comfort sliced into the lead even more with a single run in the third and 2 in the fourth and it was a one-run game at 8-7.
Florence responded by scoring 3 runs over the next two innings and built the lead back up to 11-7.
The Deer plated a run in the bottom of the sixth and it was 11-8 heading into the seventh frame where the Lady Buffs picked up 4 insurance runs and made it 15-8.
Comfort tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh and pushed in 2 runs thanks to two more Florence errors (6 for the game) and it was 15-10 with only one out, but the next two batters were retired to end it.
