Oscar L. Major

Nov. 21, 1944 April 17, 2025

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Oscar L. Major, age 80, of Boerne, Texas, died April 17, 2025. He was born Nov. 21, 1944, in San Marcos, Texas, to the late Jack Major and Dorothy (Scott) Major. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Kathryn S. Major, a son, Brent A. Major, and a sister, Marsha Gutierrez.

Oscar graduated from San Marcos High School in San Marcos and earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Southwest Texas State University.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1970 and completed the Infantry Officer Candidate School. Oscar also completed the Redeye Missile Gunnery and Airborne courses, and the Command and General Staff College.

He served his country honorably for 23 years, retiring June 30, 1993, with the rank of lieutenant colonel. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he received the following decorations and citations: Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal, with pendant and First Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Medal with Service Star, and the Army Service Ribbon.

Oscar’s career took him and his family to Fort Richardson, Alaska; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Kreuzburg, Germany; Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Carson, Colorado; and Camp Stanley, Texas.

In his personal life, Oscar was very much a family man. He loved spending time with his wife and children, his siblings and many nieces and nephews. Oscar loved nothing more than to laugh; a good or bad joke was always on the back burner to see those he loved smiling.

Being outdoors was one of his greatest pleasures, be it deer hunting, fishing, spending summers at “the hills,” playing Jaws with his kids at the beach or simply enjoying his back porch.

He is survived by one daughter, Melissa (Jerry) Cardwell; eight grandchildren, Jerrett, Jacob, Joshua, Kara and Jack Cardwell, and Layla, Jovie and Stevie Ray English; three brothers, Jerry (Kathy) Major, Bill (Barbara) Major and David (Jana) Major; two sisters, Denise Baskin and Debbie (David) Sanders; his “brousin,” Gene Sawyer; two sisters-in-law, Alice (Richard) Kuhn and Laura (John) McAuley; numerous adored nieces and nephews, and a great many friends.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. May 6, 2025, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road in San Antonio, Texas. The cemetery requests everyone attending the service to be seated by 10:30 a.m., so as not to distract the caisson horses.

Friends and family will gather for public visitations from 5-7 p.m. April 28, 2025, at Ebensberger Fisher Funeral Home, 1265 N. Main St. in Boerne, Texas. The family asks that you continue to check the website for updates.
