Evelyn Torbert Upshaw
Jan. 6, 1923 April 25, 2025
Evelyn Torbert Upshaw, longtime resident of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, died April 25, 2025, at the age of 102.
Preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, A. Russell Upshaw Jr., Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Susan (Ken) Thomas, Hendersonville, North Carolina, and Louise (Bruce) Upshaw-McClenny, Houston; three grandchildren, Ashley (Jared) Smith, Russell (Jacky) McClenny, and Aubrey McClenny (Jack) Pendergast; and two great-granddaughters, Emma Smith and Avery Smith.
Born and raised in Demopolis, Alabama, Evelyn embodied the charm and grace of a true Southern lady throughout her life. In freshman English class at Auburn University, she quickly caught the eye of a classmate, Russ Upshaw of Birmingham, Alabama. They were married two years later, shortly before his departure for Europe where he served as a pilot during World War II.
Reunited after the war, Evelyn and Russ began their life together, raising two daughters as his career with Eastern Air Lines took them on countless family travel adventures over the next 40 years before they retired in Boerne, Texas. In 2020, Evelyn moved to an assisted living community in Houston to be closer to her daughter’s family.
Wherever she lived, Evelyn was always deeply involved in civic and charitable organizations including the local Kappa Delta Alumni chapter, the Presbyterian Church, Republican Party activities, multiple bridge clubs, golf groups and community events — all while juggling her daughters’ busy lives, her role as a “corporate spouse” and her 10-year career as a school secretary.
Through it all she developed countless deep, lasting friendships.
A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. May 12, 2025, at St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 208 W. Bandera Road in Boerne, with a reception to follow.
