The Comfort baseball team had a tough draw to open the 3A-DII playoffs last week.
The Bobcats faced No. 2 state-ranked Wall in the first round and fell to Hawks in two games last Wednesday in doubleheader action in Brownwood.
Wall run ruled the Bobcats in both games and took the first contest in six innings, 11-1. After a 30-minute break, the teams were back at it and the Hawks closed it out with a 14-2 victory in four and a half innings.
Comfort ends its season at 10-14 overall.
Game 1 Wall 11, Comfort 1
After a 0-0 first inning, Wall broke through with 3 runs in the second and 4 in the third for the 7-0 lead.
Comfort recorded its only run of the game in the top of the fourth. Tucker Rust reached on an error and his courtesy runner, Rhyder George, later scored on a Noah Bohnert double and it was 7-1, but the Bobcats were kept off the board the rest of the way.
Wall closed out the game with 2 runs in the fourth to make it 9-1. The Hawks added 2 runs in the sixth inning and it was 11-1 and the mercy rule kicked in.
There wasn’t much difference in total hits between the teams after Wall tallied 6 hits and Comfort recorded 5 base knocks in the game.
Noah Bohnert doubled and picked up the team’s only RBI, Mason Matt and Gunner Carpenter both singled, while Brooks Davis hit 2 singles, while George scored the team’s only run.
Rust started on the hill and went 3 innings, Mason Matter and Augie Diaz de Villegas both pitched an inning as well.
Game 2 Wall 14, Comfort 2
The Hawks had a quick start in the second game and scored 8 runs in the first inning.
Comfort tallied both of its runs in the third frame and did it with two outs. Brooks Davis singled and then Gunner Carpenter doubled to score Davis and make it 8-1.
Singles from Tucker Rust and Noah Bohnert brought in Carpenter and it was 8-2, but the Hawks retired the side on the base paths to end the rally.
That would be Comfort’s only runs of the game after Wall responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the third to bump their lead to 10-2.
The Hawks pushed in 4 more runs in the fourth frame to make it 14-2. The Bobcats had to score at least 3 runs in the top of the fifth to continue playing.
Comfort put its first two runners on with no outs after Davis singled and Carpenter walked, but the next three Bobcats went down in order to end it there.
Again, Comfort kept pace in base hits and had 6, compared to 10 for Wall, but the Cats just couldn’t push enough runs across the plate to stay with the Hawks.
Gunner Carpenter doubled and walked, picked up an RBI and scored once, Brooks Davis hit 2 singles and scored a run, Mason Matt, Tucker Rust and Noah Bohnert singled and Bohnert drove in a run. Davis and Carpenter scored for the Bobcats.
Zach Jones, Mason Matter and Owen Schulze all pitched for Comfort. Matter went the longest on the hill at 2.1 innings and struck out 2, while not allowing an earned run.
