Champion faces Brahmas in playoffs for second year in a row

When Boerne Champion and MacArthur clash in the second round of the 5A baseball playoffs this week, it’ll be the second year in a row that the Chargers and Brahmas have met in this round.

Champion (25-7) is heading into the series as co-champs of 26-5A. They swept Cedar Park in the opening round to make it to the next round.

MacArthur (19-7) won District 28-5A with a record of 15-1. Their only district loss came to Southwest on March 11, by a score of 4-1.

The Brahmas swept Burbank in the first round and picked up wins of 4-1 and a 4-2 over the Bulldogs to advance to the second round. Champion and Mac met last year in the same round and the Brahmas put up a good fight before the Chargers won the series in three games.

In a series last year vs. South San, before they faced Champion, MacArthur dropped its first game but won two elimination games in a row to advance to play the Chargers.

After the Brahmas lost to Champion in Game 1 of their series last year, they rebounded to even it with the Chargers at 1-1 to win their third elimination game in a row before Champion closed it out with a 15-5 victory in Game 3 in five innings.

Champion coach Ben Woodchick says the Brahmas are good and can’t be taken lightly.

“They return a lot of position players and play hard and are aggressive offensively,” he said. “They have lots of experience and played a good tournament and non-district schedule.”
