Boerne Champion had three tennis players participate at the Region IV-5A tournament in Corpus Christi in two events and one of the entries almost made it to state.
Greta Clauss and Ethan Wolf competed in mixed doubles and Serena Sharma was entered in girls singles.
Sharma lost in the opening round of the tournament and fell to Ryan Sallee from MacArthur, 6-4, 6-1.
Clauss and Wolf won their first-round match against Cedar Park’s Michael Anthony and Natalie Le in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.

Clauss and Wolf faced Aaron Garza and Amanda Garza from Missions Veterans Memorial in the quarterfinals or second round and won that match, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals.
In the semis, Wolf and Clauss tangled with Grace Shahin and Andres Garcia from Mission Sharyland and played well but lost, 7-6, 7-6.
That loss sent Champion’s mixed double pair to the third-place match and a chance at state. Wolf and Clauss met Lydia Ou and Dylan Berthold from Cedar Park.
The Cedar Park duo won the first set, 6-2, but the Chargers fought back and were up in the second set, 5-4. Champion had set point and could have forced a third set, but Ou and Berthold rallied and took the final set, 7-5.
The top three finishers in five different categories at regionals – boys singles, girls singles, boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles – head to the state tournament scheduled for this coming Thursday and Friday, May 15-16, in San Antonio to be held at the NEISD and NISD courts.
