SAN ANTONIO – Boerne ISD Athletic Director Stan Leech was inducted into the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame at a ceremony held last Saturday night in San Antonio.
A group of about 50 people from Boerne made the short drive to the ceremony in San Antonio to watch Leech officially get enshrined.
There were seven other inductees, along with Leech, and all eight had impressive basketball backgrounds.
Leech was the last to speak and focused mainly on the Boerne people who attended the event, including family, friends and Boerne ISD employees. He acknowledged as many of the 50 or so people as he could.
Leech spoke of his growing up years in Brownfield and said God puts people in our path and uses them to help and added that his coaching journey is an example of that.
“I had friends, coaches and I had support and because of that, this little boy from Brownwood got to fulfill every one of his dreams,” he said. “Go in peace.”
Leech amassed a career record of 833-324 in a 32-year coaching career. He led two Boerne teams to the state tournament in 1990 and 2008, made 26 playoff appearances and won 12 district titles.
The 1990 Greyhound team pulled off one of the biggest upsets in tournament history and is the only BISD basketball team to win a game at the state tourney.
Leech was the head boys basketball coach at Boerne High for 22 seasons and the head boys basketball coach at Champion for 10 seasons prior to retiring from coaching in 2018. Leech is in his 38th year at Boerne ISD, including his 25th year as the district Athletic Director.
