5-on-5 hoops championship

The Matzah Ballers closed out their Spring 2025 city of Boerne 5-on-5 Basketball League in dominant fashion, rolling past the Slowpokes, 76–42, to claim the league championship.

But this wasn’t just any win — it was a must-win by margin. With both teams tied in the standings at 7-1, the title came down to headto- head results and point differential. Heading into Tuesday night’s matchup, the Ballers needed to win by at least 15 points to clinch the crown.

They exceeded that goal — and then some.

Running a disciplined 2-3 zone defense, the Matzah Ballers stifled the Slowpokes from the opening tip. The zone shut down driving lanes, collapsed on bigs, and forced contested outside shots all game long. The defensive effort led to turnovers and fast-break opportunities that the Ballers capitalized on again and again.

On the offensive side, David Rogers and Wyatt Bruss put on an absolute clinic, combining for 54 of the team’s 76 points.

Rogers attacked the rim with purpose and finesse, while Bruss lit it up from beyond the arc and in transition, leaving defenders scrambling.

“We knew what was at stake,” said Ben Carl, captain of the Matzah Ballers. “Everyone bought into the game plan — our 2-3 zone worked exactly how we drew it up, and David and Wyatt were unstoppable. This was a complete team win.”

Carl also gave credit where it was due: “The Slowpokes were a dominant, well-balanced team all season,” he added. “They had strong bigs, solid guards, and gave us one of our toughest matchups of the year. We knew we had to play our best basketball to beat them — and we did.”

With the trophy in hand and championship shirts proudly worn, the Ballers celebrated with fans — including their youngest supporter, who stood front and center holding a basketball with a championship grin when they took a team photo.

Looking ahead, the Matzah Ballers have no plans to slow down. They’ve already committed to returning for the Boerne Fall League and are eyeing back-to-back titles.

After a season of grit, hustle, and big-time performances, one thing is clear: the Matzah Ballers have arrived — and they’re just getting started.
