SAN ANTONIO – Champion fought to the bitter end in hopes of avoiding elimination Friday in San Antonio at the Northeast Sports Park.
After dropping Game 1 Thursday in Austin, 1-0, the Chargers were trailing 9-5 in Game 2 going into its last at bat in the 5A-DII regional finals.
Champion tried to rally and pushed in three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-8. The Chargers had the tying run at third and the winning run at second with two outs, but Liberty Hill’s defense recorded the third out to end it at 9-8.
After only scoring one combined run in Thursday’s Game 1, it was a different story in Friday’s Game 2.
Liberty Hill smacked two home runs on Friday, while the Chargers hit one out of the park as the team’s combined for 17 runs and 19 hits in Game 2.
Both teams used three different pitchers in Friday’s game as Champion was trying to take it to Game 3 and Liberty Hill was trying to end it.
Liberty Hill advances to the state semifinals, while the season comes to an end for the Chargers at 29-10.
