Smithson Valley baseball to play for state title

District 26-5A will be represented at this week’s state baseball tournament after Smithson Valley has advanced all the way to the 5A-DI title game.

The Rangers are in the same district as Boerne High and Boerne Champion and had to hustle to make it into the playoffs, but they did and have made it to Friday’s championship game.

Smithson Valley (27-12) plays Aledo (31-8) Friday at Dell Diamond for the 5A-DI title at 7 p.m.

The Rangers were on the bubble towards the end of district play but won their last five 26-5A games to secure a playoff berth. After losing to Wagner, they beat the Thunderbirds later that week and then swept Kerrville Tivy and Veterans Memorial to clinch a spot.

Both Boerne ISD schools split with the Rangers this year. The Chargers beat them 7-5 but lost to them in their rematch, 8-0, in games played about a week apart.

Boerne High tangled with the Rangers twice in the same week, and BHS took the first game 11-6, but dropped the second contest, 9-7.

Once Smithson Valley made the postseason, they dropped their first game in their series opener against Rouse but won the next two. They did the same thing against Palmview.

The Rangers also defeated Seguin, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial and Barbers Hill along the way to Round Rock. They swept Seguin and Barbers Hill and took a third game with Veterans Memorial after winning the first game and dropping the second.

Smithson Valley won a state title in football last fall and is now trying to win another in baseball in the same school year. If the Rangers win Friday, they would be the first UIL school from the greater San Antonio area to accomplish the feat.

Six of the football players are on the baseball team.
