The Boerne Champion football program didn’t have to look very far to find its new offensive coordinator.
Champion promoted from within and bumped up Tyler Mangold from tight ends coach and named him the new offensive coordinator.
Mangold has been the tight ends coach for the last five years with the Chargers and while they opened up the job to any applicants, Champion head coach Blane Ellis said Mangold was the best fit.
“He’s done a great job in the last five years for us and was always a candidate for the job from the beginning,” Ellis said. “We’re excited to have him in that role. This is a great opportunity for him and the Chargers.”
Mangold replaces Kevin Brown, who left last spring to become the head coach at Waco Robinson. Ellis said they aren’t making wholesale changes to the offense but will tweak a few things. He said they’ll still be a run-pass option offense and added that they will try to speed up the game.
“The best way to describe it is that the car will still be the same, we’re just going to adjust the seats and the mirrors,” Ellis said. “Tempo is the biggest adjustment; we’re going to try to go faster. It gives us an edge, and it paints you in a corner defensively.”
A lot of Ellis’ offensive staff recently met with former Champion offensive coordinator JD Zimmerhanzel, who has been the head coach at Davenport for the last several years. They wanted to pick Zimmerhanzel’s brain as they tweak the Charger offense.
Also for the Chargers, Brett Marthis has been hired from the Northside district. Marthis served at one of the NISD middle schools and will be Champion’s tight ends coach.
There was one more addition to the football staff after Chandler Patterson joined the Chargers. Patterson came from Sinton and will coach defensive backs.
