EDITOR’S NOTE: Each month, the Boerne Star sends its “crack team” of restaurant reviewers to an establishment in the area. These ladies — who have assumed the names of Pam, Erin, Nellie and Kelly, from TV’s “The Office” — select a restaurant, show up unannounced, and take in all the establishment has to offer. This month: Richter Tavern.
The Dining Divas set their sights on a popular Boerne eatery: The Richter Tavern. The consensus was the same across the board: The red-bricked building blends modern and traditional architecture while also serving up a scrumptious meal.
Erin ordered a tavern classic, a burger with the works. The smokey taste of the meat paired excellently with the sweet pickles and fresh fries. While there was a little bit of a hard piece or two, the dish passed the test as a staple dish in a staple eatery.
Kelly said she especially enjoys the rich, sweet and delicious cinnamon rolls at the Richter bakery — but she was excited to try the tavern for dinner for the first time.
One thing that struck Kelly the most was that the restaurant had a very open floor plan. The exposed red brick with touches of bright white shiplap made the place feel homey, rustic, clean and classic.
Being a huge fan of pizza, Kelly ordered the Bianca Pizza, which has garlic ricotta, prosciutto, basil, mozzarella and drizzled balsamic. Kelly could think of no better word for the taste than “dreamy.”
The crust was perfectly cooked and still soft, with the cheese wonderfully creamy and lovely. The toppings added hearty, tangy, and earthly flavors. Kelly recommends getting the Restaurants Passport from the Boerne Visitor Center, so guests can enjoy a free dessert with their entrée – and of course, Kelly recommends the cinnamon roll, though other options can include the vibrant red velvet cheesecake or cinnamon roll bread pudding.
Nellie, a devoted Brussel sprouts enthusiast, was thrilled to try Richter’s Roasted Brussels Sprouts with bacon and soy glaze. The dish arrived with impressively generous portions.
“I ordered the sprouts to share, and even after everyone dug in, I still had enough for a to-go box,” Nellie said.
The soy glaze lent a delightful, slightly sweet stickiness that perfectly balanced the sprouts’ natural earthiness, which can turn bitter if not handled with care.
“The bacon to sprouts ratio was spot on,” Nellie said, noting how it set the tone for a wonderful evening.
For her main course, Nellie chose the Pad Thai with medium heat, heeding the server’s warning about the dish’s potential for intense spiciness.
“Medium is just right,” Nellie said. “I could still savor the tangy sauce, tender chicken, and the subtle flavors of egg and onion.”
The fresh bean sprouts added a crisp, refreshing contrast. As with the appetizer, the portion was so ample that Nellie took nearly half home.
Last but certainly not least, Pam ordered a favorite: Chicken parmesan, which she described as “warm and comforting.”
“The chicken was perfectly crisp, topped with rich marinara and set on creamy mashed potatoes and tender green beans,” Pam said.
The food was delivered hot and delicious, with every bite feeling like a cozy moment, simple, heartfelt and full of flavor.
If that’s not enough to convince you, try the food for yourself.
The Richter Tavern is open Thursday from 11a.m. to 8 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. You can reserve a table by going online to their website or by calling 830-331-2675.
