Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO)’s Technical Advisory Committee Wednesday asked for Boerne’s feedback — and got it — on determining funding recommendations to the Transportation Policy Board.

“When I became commissioner, I said we needed to do something about the Herff-46 intersection,” Kendall County Precinct 2 Commissioner Andra Wisian said, while attending the MPO’s meeting at the Kronkosky Center.

“With a million-dollar match, thanks to the Texas Department of Transportation, it is included in the projects,” Wisian said.

The projects included in the presentation are for the 20272030 Transportation Improvement Department and are also reflected in the AAMPO’s long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan and the 2026 Transportation Conformity Determination.

“We not only improve roads, efforts for freights, transits and bike roads,” said Cecilio Martinez, AAMPO planning program manager. “Overall better mobility for the area.” The planning area encompasses over 2,700 square miles and includes Bexar, Comal and Guadalupe counties, along with a portion of Kendall County. Rapid growth and development have led to increased transportation needs.

The MPO has 12 categories in place for funding, and timelines for all projects. From the previous year, roadway, transit, bicycle, pedestrian and other projects annually let to contract from fiscal year 2004 through 2020.

In total, MPO lists 49 projects within the projected area, totaling over $1 billion. Category 5 handles congestion, mitigation and air quality improvement, at $46.3million. Category 7 for surface transportation and block grants, comes in at $179.5 million.

Projects in category 9, for transportation alternatives, total $14.6 million, while Category 10 projects for carbon reduction programming, comes in at $16.2 million.

In Boerne, there is a citywide sidewalk project to construct new sidewalks along existing streets in multiple locations with a $2.6 million price tag.

Overall, the MPO goal is to widen highways — Highway 46 is in the works — upgrade signals, turn lanes, intersections, improve buses, park-and-rides, and rail planning. It also includes initiatives to support safety, clean air and mobility.

“Segment 2 at the I-10 interchange flyovers will all be open by the end of next year,” Jennifer Serold, TxDOT public information officer, said. “We’re getting a lot of work done.”
