BOERNE — If you can’t find anything to do on July 4 in Kendall County, you certainly aren’t looking very hard.

Fireworks, DJs, bands, parades, 5Ks — you name it, you can do it, all within a 15or 20-minute drive of town.

We’ll start in Boerne, where athletes, early risers and plain ol’ patriotic folk will turn out as early as 7 a.m. for the sixth annual 5K Flag Run in downtown Boerne. Hundreds will line up for the 5K run which starts at 8:05 a.m., minutes after the one-mile walkers take off from the start-finish line.

Last year, more than 350 runners and walkers took part, with watermelons given to the top three finishers in men’s and women’s age brackets.

Once that’s over, it’s time to dash down Interstate 10 to Comfort for the annual Comfort Fourth of July Celebration. Everyone, and I mean everyone, in Comfort turns out for this show of shows.

The 100-entry-plus parade begins at 10 a.m., but not before dozens of kids start things off with a 9:30 a.m. bicycle parade. Decorated bikes ridden by children in costumes are the norm, and they draw a great response from the audience — especially the moms and dads — already seated along the parade route.

Everything you’d traditionally expect in a parade, will roll down High Street on Friday. Fire trucks, car clubs, company floats, veterans, old tractors, crazy-driving mini cars, horses, bands — you know it’s going to pass you by on Friday.

Once the parade ends, the crowd will make its way to Comfort Community Park for several hours of food, dancing, activities and general Fourth fun.

At noon, the Miss Comfort Court Pageant will be held, selecting and saluting the year’s royalty. There will be more food vendors selling more food than you can consume. There will be arts and crafts, games for the kids, a water slide, and a silent auction — all under the tunes provided by The Drugstore Cowboys, who will take their place in the pavilion and play until the party’s over.

And don’t forget: Comfort’s shops and stores are staying open, with the Fourth Of July Market at Remedy Hall. Shops open at 8:30 a.m. and stay open until the Comfort Park event ends.

Pay them a visit, browse the goods and products, and make that purchase. You, and they, will be glad you did.

The evening brings, of course, fireworks shows, specifically two that will entertain and fascinate — for 15 to 20 minutes, at least — those who love aerial explosions.

In Fair Oaks Ranch, things get underway when gates open at 6 p.m. at the Fair Oaks Ranch Golf and Country Club, 7900 Fair Oaks Parkway.

Once the gates open, attendees will be able to pick their ideal viewing spot — do NOT forget your lawn chairs and blankets to sit on for the evening.

A DJ, food booths, kids’ games and “adult beverage” tickets will keep the masses busy until the fireworks and laser show starts at 9 p.m. (No outside food or beverage admitted, though, so come prepared to buy, buy, buy).

Right here in Boerne, the Boerne Parks and Recreation Department will launch the city’s fireworks and laser light show, which also has a 9 p.m. start time.

The city tells us that prime viewing spots will be at the Kendall County Fairgrounds, Champion High School and Boerne City Park. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for your own comfort, but tents and canopies won’t be allowed, so everyone can see.

Snacks and drinks ARE permitted, but no glass, so leave the bottles at home. There will be food trucks and booths in the area.

Note: Personal fireworks are a no-no, for everyone’s safety. Go enjoy the city’s fireworks show; leave your own at home.
