Longtime Kerrville Tivy boys soccer coach Reece Zunker has been identified as one of those who drowned in the recent flooding on the Guadalupe River. Zunker and his wife Paula, have been confirmed dead by authorities. The Zunker family, Reece and his wife Paula and their two children, were camping along the river in Hunt when they were swept away by the waters.
As of Tuesday morning, the Zunker’s two children, Lyle and Holland, were still missing.
A Kerrville ISD Instagram post paid tribe to the Zunker family, particularly to Reece because of his impact on the soccer program.
“We’re heartbroken over the loss of Coach Reece Zunker and his wife Paula. Our Tivy Soccer & KISD community is heartbroken with the loss of our leader and inspiration.
“Coach Reece Zunker was not just a soccer coach he was a mentor, teacher and a role model for our Kerrville kids,” the statement read.
Kerrville Tivy is in District 26-5A and played Boerne Champion and Boerne High this past spring in boys soccer.
Chargers coach Dustin Gold was a girls soccer coach at New Braunfels Canyon when Reece was a player on the boys team at NB Canyon.
“It was special this year to be in the same soccer district and play against each other twice, including what became his last game that he coached,” Gold said.
BHS coach Michael Strong said he always sensed Zunker had a lot of passion for his job. Zunker coached the Antlers boys team for 12 years.
“My best memory is talking before our game at Tivy and him telling me how much he loved coaching at Tivy because of his guys,” Strong said.
