METCALF
June 21, 2025 Dec. 21, 1928
Thurston Metcalf, of Boerne, Texas, went home to the Lord on June 21, 2025, at the age of 96. A Memorial service is planned for July 21, at First Baptist Church in Boerne, Texas. Thurston was laid to rest with his deceased wife, Mabel, on July 7, at Clear Creek Cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana.
Thurston was born on Dec. 21, 1928, to Arthur and Katherine Metcalf in Estill County, Kentucky. Comments in his high school yearbook were complimentary of his sharp intellect and friendly nature — traits he maintained throughout his long life.
Following graduation, he worked as an electrical lineman, machinist, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his military service, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, and worked in manufacturing plants assembling rockets and automobiles. In a short time, he became an automotive engineer employed by a variety of auto suppliers until he retired nearly 30 years later.
Although Thurston began behind a mule-drawn plow in a Depression-era Kentucky holler, his life spanned a century of change and Thurston was consistently enthralled with new technology and embraced progress, always looking to the future not dwelling in the past.
While in Detroit, Thurston met Mabel Reeves and the two wed in 1957. They raised three boys and were supportive of their children’s school events, recreational interests, and faithful in church activities.
Thurston was hard-working and industrious and was devoted to his wife Mabel, caring and providing for her faithfully. Thurston enjoyed the successes and empathized with the setbacks of his three sons, and a signal joy of his was to spend time with them and, as time passed, with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Thurston is survived by his sons Gregory Metcalf (Katy) of Boerne, Texas, Barry Metcalf of Topeka, Kansas, and Randy Metcalf (Tracy) of Jasper, Missouri; his grandchildren, Lucas Metcalf, Jacob Metcalf, Hannah Wilburn (Ben), Autumn Metcalf, Mileah Metcalf and Gabriellah Metcalf; three great-grandchildren, Adaline Wilburn, Ivory Wilburn and Scarlett Wilburn; and his siblings, Betty Jo Shellhorn, Rita Sperrow, Kay Case and John Metcalf.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel; his parents; Wanda Hyde (sister); Eursel Metcalf (brother); and an infant daughter.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Town and Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Alamo Hospice, both of Boerne, for their care in his final days, and to all loving friends and family who have shared comforting prayers and supportive wishes during this time.
