• NATIONAL PURPLE HEART Day will be celebrated in Boerne with the 9:30 a.m. dedication of a new purple bench placed in Veterans Plaza, 801 S. Main St., facing the recently completed Purple Heart Memorial. The project was spearheaded by Mark Sierra, of Compadres Hill Country Cocina, and the Purple Heart Project.

• SISTERDALE VFD FLOOD Relief BBQ and Dance at the station, 1207 Sisterdale Road, about 12 miles north of Boerne on FM 1376. The event starts at 5 p.m. with serving of a barbecue dinner through 9 p.m. and a Bucket Raffle; The Ricky Adams Band takes the stage from 8-11 p.m.

• SECOND SATURDAY AUTHOR Signing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Heath Library. Anthony Goulet, author of “Broken Home, Healed Nest!” will be on hand to sign copies and be available to discuss the topics covered in the book.

• COUNTY’S BIGGEST LIARS: The ninth annual Kendall County Liars Contest brings tellers of tall tales to the Patrick Heath Community Library’ Community Room beginning at 2 p.m. Some of the greatest storytellers from around Texas compete to be named the “Best” liar in Kendall County. Program is free to attend.

• TEEN WELCOMING PARTY after the first day of school at the Partick Heath Library. Come starting at 4:15 p.m. just to unwind, meet new people and see what the library has in store for you this school year. Music, snacks, games and creative stations where you can make buttons, try blackout poetry, or just hang out with friends.

AUGUST 13

• WATER CONSERVATION SERIES: Water expert Larry Sunn of Rain Bees leads this 13-week series on water conservation from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Patrick Heath Public Library. Knowledgeable presenters will be on hand each week to share information on a wide range of fascinating topics. This week: Aquifers. On Aug. 20, rain harvesting; and Aug. 27, drip irrigation.

AUGUST 16

• AUDITION ALERT FOR the ninth annual Hill Country’s Got Talent contest. Boerne Community Theatre is hosting its annual talent competition and is taking applications. Auditions will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and 12:30-4 p.m. Aug. 17. Register at: hillcountrysgottalent.com.
