Boerne High may have had a slow start on Friday when the Greyhounds visited Alamo Heights for a district contest at Orem Stadium, but it was a different story in the last two quarters as BHS tallied five second-half touchdowns and went on to defeat the Mules in the district opener for both schools, 38-31.
Friday’s contest keeps the Greyhounds perfect this year at 5-0 and hands the Mules (4-1, 0-1) their first loss of the season. BHS (5-0, 1-0) is off Friday and returns to action on Oct. 8 against Long Creek at BISD Stadium.
Alamo Heights struggled in the first half as well, but they found the end zone one time and took a 7-3 lead into halftime after Boerne’s only points came on a Diego Jimenez field goal.
The Greyhounds heated up in the third quarter as they recorded the first of five touchdowns in the half after Grant Sweeney tossed a TD pass to Jacob Hicks and Boerne took a 10-7 lead with 8:50 left in the period.
Boerne’s defense came up with a big play and recovered a fumble on a backwards pass, or lateral, at the Mules 1-yard line. Sweeney found Hicks again for a score, and the Greyhounds had tallied two touchdowns in 1:07 for the 17-7 lead.
Alamo Heights scored a couple of touchdowns in the third quarter and took a 21-17 lead, but the Hounds jumped back on top early in the fourth quarter thanks to another Sweeney TD pass, this time to Lane Aaron and it was 24-21 early in the final stanza.
Callan Combs added to Boerne’s lead with a rushing touchdown and the Hounds extended their advantage to 31-21 with 7:26 left in the game.
Sweeney bumped Boerne’s lead to 38-21 with 4:51 remaining in the game with a rushing touchdown for the 17-point edge.
The Mules closed out the game with the final 10 points as Boerne’s defense bent but didn’t break and the Greyhounds recorded the 38-31 win.
