Bands open marching season in heat of summer

Boerne High School’s Band Director Daniel Person expressed excitement in starting summer band camp with a veteran team.

Of the 121 band members, Person said there are 25 leaders: Four drum majors, two captains, four guard captains, and 15 section leaders. Each role has specific responsibilities.

“Our drum majors conduct,” Person said. “The guard captains work with the color guard. Captains oversee the woodwinds, brass and drumline, and the section leaders are all instrument specific.”

Person’s squad will need its veteran leadership in place, as the band welcomes a sizable influx of youth as well.

“We had 41 freshmen join this year,” Person said. “That’s about a third of our team.”

Per University Interscholastic League (UIL) regulations, practices cannot exceed 15 hours per week, something Person said he abides by, along with regular water breaks.

The prior week consisted of three days of practice while adjusting to a five-day practice week this week.

“I would like our first performance to be at the first football game,” Person said, “but if it’s too hot for them to put on their uniforms and perform, we will wait a few weeks. We also need to see how quickly they digest everything here at camp.”

The coming theme for the band show is “Power Surge.” The electricity- themed program has Person hopeful they will be able to qualify for state.

“They are consistent UIL award winners,” Person said. “They do well to qualify for area, it’s trying to get to area finals and state that’s always the hurdle we have to go through. We are in the most competitive marching area in the state for 5A, both us and Champion High School.”

Person has also achieved success with former teams, having won a Metallica Marching Band Contest a few years back.
