Back tò School 2025
District ready with new principals, cellphone ban, parenting app unveil
It’s that time of year again, “Back to School” for the Boerne Independent School District as an anticipated 11,200 students return to classrooms Tuesday.
Director of Communications Dr. Maggie Dominguez said the student projection is similar to last year’s count but said the district usually picks up about 200 additional students during the year.
Changes within Boerne ISD include the promotions of assistant principals to principals, and principals moving to different schools in the Kendall County area.
As far as facilities are concerned, the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center at Champion High School will be open for the entire school year. “It opened back on May 1 of 2025,” Dominguez said, “But the space will be fully utilized this year. We also have a health-science focal area at Boerne High School that will be fully in use.”
One hot topic among parents is House Bill 1481, a legislative act that mandates a ban on student use of personal communication devices. The bill does not just apply to cell phone devices, it means all communication devices, including air pods and Apple watches.
Dominguez said the response from parents has been positive and helpful.
“Last year, we had our students put their devices away unless it was for an educational reason, and it was very well received by our community and closely respected by the students,” she said. “Because this bill just passed in June and is expected to be implemented by September, it will be a change for us.”
The district’s current policy is “off and away,” meaning devices must be turned off and put away in backpacks.
“But we are getting clarification from the state to see what changes need to be made to our policy,” she said.
A survey by Boerne ISD regarding the subject garnered over 5,000 supportive responses and suggestions just this past weekend.
Apart from social media, parents can expect to stay informed of all policies, happenings, bus routes, necessary school supplies and dietary questions on the Boerne ISD website page: https:// www. boerneisd. net/ student/back-to-school.
“(About) 20% of our student population are on the free-andreduced lunch,” Dominguez said. “The forms for this federal program are also on this page.”
The dates for prep days — and the Aug. 12 “first day of school” — are also listed there, along with the Boerne ISD handbook. Each individual school has its own designated website with a weekly newsletter from the school’s principal.
A direct form of communication for teachers and parents will also be rolling out across Boerne ISD this year — an app called Parents Square.
“We have a year to implement it across the board,” Dominguez said. “Some campuses have already started using it to hit the ground running.”
Dominguez encourages parents with any additional questions to reach out. “We are always happy to help,” she added.
