SAN ANTONIO – The Boerne Champion volleyball team turned into road warriors to open the 2025 volleyball season.
Champion was at Southwest High School and while their margin of victory shrunk with each passing set, the Lady Chargers still managed a sweep over the Lady Dragons, 25-8, 25-20, 26-24.
After the sweep, Champion starts the year at 1-0 and will play in a tournament in Abilene this weekend.
The Lady Chargers breezed in that first set at SW and didn’t allow the Dragons to reach double digits but Southwest improved after that and played Champion much tougher the rest of the way.
In the second set, the Dragons stayed close and it was only a two-point game near the midway point at 12-10. But the Chargers started to pull away from there and went on a 6-1 run for a comfortable 18-11 advantage.

Southwest played its best set of the night in Game 3 and never trailed until late. While the Dragons led for most of that last set, they could never get more than three points ahead on the scoreboard.
The Dragons held a 3-point lead on nine different occasions in that third set, the last coming at 20-17.
It was tied at 22-22 and again at 23-23 before Southwest pulled ahead at 24-23 and were one point away from forcing a fourth set, but the Lady Chargers hung tough and tied it at 24-24.
After that Champion pulled ahead at 25-24 for its first lead of the set. From there, the Lady Chargers closed it out with the final point on a SW ball hit into the net on a kill attempt to end it.
