The Boerne Champion volleyball team made the drive to Abilene to play in the Bev Ball Tournament last weekend.
Champion has been playing at that tourney for a number of seasons now and has always done well. This year was no exception as the Lady Chargers took first place in the gold consolation bracket.
Head coach Kelly McDaniel said Finley Weikle made the all-tournament team. The Lady Chargers played seven matches at the tourney and posted a 6-1 record to stand at 7-1 overall.
Champion began district play Tuesday at Kerrville Tivy. After that, they are entered in the Pieper tournament.
The Chargers opened in Abilene by going 3-0 in pool play and swept all three teams they played. The Chargers swept, 25-6, 25-19, beat Brownwood, 25-16, 25-14 and toppled Wall, 25-23, 25-20.
Champion suffered its only loss to Frenship and was swept by the Tigers, 25-19, 25-20, but bounced back to win its next three.
The Chargers defeated El Paso Americas, 25-20, 25-9, swept Holliday, 25-21, 25-6, and then faced Wall again.
Champion beat the Hawks one more time, but this match went to three sets before the Chargers prevailed, 26-24, 24-26, 25-18.
