While Johnson City may have graduated 10 players from its 2024 2A-DI state championship volleyball team, the Lady Eagles look like they’ve reloaded and are ready to make another strong push this year.
The defending state champions were in Boerne Tuesday night, and after a rocky start, were able to defeat Geneva School of Boerne.
Johnson City spoiled Geneva’s home opener and swept the Eagles, 26-24, 25-14, 25-21.
Geneva is 6-5 overall and is scheduled to play in the All-Saints Tourney this weekend.
Both Geneva and Johnson City have Eagles as their mascots and the Eagles from Geneva had a fast start on Tuesday but couldn’t keep the momentum.
In that first set, Geneva was up by a touchdown, 21-14, but JC went on a 6-0 run to make it a one-point game at 21-20. The Johnson City spurt ended up being 8-1 which tied it at 22-22.
Eagles coach Tami Owens burned her second timeout at that point (the first coming with a 21-19 lead), but it didn’t slow down Johnson City.
It was tied at 23s and again at 24s before JC scored the final two points to take Game 1.
The Eagles from JC went up 6-1 in the second set and never trailed in the game. They opened up a 10-point advantage at 16-6 before winning by 11 points.
It looked like Geneva might force a fourth set after they fought back in Game 3. The GSB Eagles were trailing 15-10 at one point but managed to tie it at 20-20 and even took a 21-20 lead.
Johnson City knotted it up at 21-21 and tallied the final four points to put it away and complete the sweep.
