SAN ANTONIO – In their season opener, the Geneva Eagles eked out a 28-21 win over the San Antonio Christian Lions on the road as junior quarterback-linebacker Bryce Hanover sealed it on both sides of the ball.
Senior receiver Brady Chandler took a short throw from Hanover up the sideline and in for a score to give the Eagles a 28-21 lead with 2:06 remaining in the game.
As SAC began a final drive attempting to tie the score, Hanover nabbed an interception with 1:28 remaining to solidify the win.
This game did not start with Hanover under center as junior quarterback Caleb Quitadamo started the game and provided some dual threat ability. But Coach Bob Rosenstiel made the call in the second half for the QB change, with Quitadamo coming off an injury and needing more experience.
“He might be a little bit unsure of himself but he’s a great quarterback,” Rosenstiel said. “We just need to focus a little more and give him more reps.”
In the first half, sophomore running back Shae McNew drove the offense with two touchdowns, one on the ground and the other receiving, giving the Eagles a 14-7 lead heading into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, Hanover took over as signal caller and connected deep with Reid Aderholt for a touchdown, increasing the Eagles lead to 21-7 in the third.
That momentum continued as the Geneva defense forced a third turnover with an interception.
Right when you think it’s time for the Eagles to take full control of the game, the Lions wouldn’t quit and recorded a pick-6 to narrow the lead to one score, 21-14.
Coach Rosenstiel says despite the mishaps his team made in the game, he was proud of their grit to find a way to win.
“We pushed through the third and fourth quarter, when we may not have done that before,” the coach said. “We finished the game and that’s what I’m most proud of.”
The 1-0 Eagles stay on the road Friday, traveling to play the LaPryor Bulldogs in non-district action.
