There were plenty of momentum swings in Boerne High’s season opener Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium between the Greyhounds and the Pieper Warriors.
The teams battled through six ties or lead changes in the first three quarters before the final momentum swing went the Warriors’ way.
Pieper came up with a late touchdown to pull ahead by seven points. The Greyhounds tried to answer and moved the ball deep into Warriors’ territory before Pieper came up with a late turnover to turn the Greyhounds away and secure a 35-28 victory.
Greyhounds coach Brett Sawyer said the Warriors made plays in crunch time and gave them credit for that.
“It came down to the last seconds and that’s something to build on as the season goes on. I’m proud of them and even though it didn’t go our way, that was a fun game to be a part of,” he said. “They had a good drive when it mattered. They executed and hats off to them, they executed well.”
Pieper took a 21-14 lead into halftime and then scored on its opening drive of the third quarter to open up a 28-14 advantage.
The Greyhounds answered and capped an 8-play, 82-yard drive with a Jeff Morrison 9-yard scamper into the end zone to make it 28-21.
After forcing a Pieper punt, Morrison found the end zone again, this time on a 5-yard sprint to tie it up at 28-28 late in the third. It was the third rushing TD of the night for Morrison, who also tallied a touchdown in the second period. Boerne’s other score came in the first quarter when QB Grant Sweeney hit Will Traylor on a 27-yard strike.
The Warriors threatened to take the lead in the fourth quarter but an interception in the end zone by Kole Traylor turned the Warriors away, however Boerne’s offense struggled and they had to punt.
Pieper took over at midfield with 5:48 left and used a 31-yard run by Brady Hopper to set them up with a 1st and goal at the BHS 5-yard line. Tyler LeCombe punched it in there from there on a quarterback keeper and put the Warriors ahead, 38-25.
BHS still had 2:11 to work with and one timeout. The Greyhounds moved the ball to the Warriors 27 and faced a 4th and 1. Boerne ran the ball and came up with a first down, but a Pieper defender stripped the ball away from the BHS running back and the Warriors recovered at the 19-yard line with three seconds left. Pieper was able to kill the clock from there to secure the win.
“We tried to get a first down and kill it and have two shots at the end zone, that was our goal,” Sawyer said. “Sometimes things don’t go your way.”
