Chargers, Greyhounds, Eagles and Bobcats all on the road
The high school football season continues this week for all the area teams and it looks like all four 11-man teams in Kendall County will be on the road.
Champion is at Castroville against Medina Valley, Boerne is in Laredo Thursday night against Laredo United, Comfort is at Dilley and Geneva School of Boerne plays at La Pryor.
Three of the four teams, the Chargers, Comfort and Geneva picked up wins, while the Greyhounds fell at home last week.
Boerne Champion
The Chargers are on the road for the second straight week after opening the season in Laredo last Friday.
Champion rolled at the border, defeating United South, 58-10, to start the year at 1-0. It’s their largest margin of victory over the Panthers in their four meetings.
Chargers coach Blane Ellis said it was a great allaround performance.
“I was most impressed with our energy and execution in all three phases of the game,” he said. “We played fast, focused and physical, something we talked about since last year.”
After holding a 9-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Chargers tallied four second-quarter touchdowns to take a 37-3 lead by halftime.
In the second half, the Chargers outscored the Panthers, 21-7.
As good as they played, Ellis said there’s room for improvement.
“There’s much to work on, we can clean up routes and fine tune some offensive line foot work,” he said. “We can also clean up some defensive alignments and fits.”
Medina Valley is also 1-0 after they won their opener at Leander Glenn, so one of the team’s will suffer their first loss on Friday.
The Panthers defeated the Grizzlies, 44-32, and jumped out to a 34-14 halftime lead. Glenn outscored Medina Valley in the second half, 18-10, but still lost by 12.
Medina Valley only had 93 yards through the air and only completed two passes, but both went for touchdowns. The Panthers did a lot of their damage on the ground with 266 rushing yards and 3 TDs.
Ellis said the Panthers are solid.
“They’re much improved offensively from last year. They run the veer, and it will be a fun challenge for us physically,” he said. “We have to take advantage in all three phases of the game.”
Boerne High
Pieper secured a 35-28 victory over the Greyhounds last Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium and used a late scoring drive and then came up with a defensive stop to secure the win.
BHS head coach Brett Sawyer said he felt like it would come down to the fourth quarter and gave Pieper credit for closing it out in crunch time.
“They had a big drive there at the end when it mattered,” he said. “They executed and hats off to them, they executed well.”
Sawyer said Friday’s loss can be a good teaching tool for his team.
“Pieper is really good, and we don’t have a lot of experience but fought through it and that’s something you can build on,” he said. “We are light years from where we were in our first scrimmage. We want to keep improving and want to peak when it matters, that’s our goal.”
In last year’s game between Pieper and Boerne, the Warriors won, yet the Greyhounds rebounded and made it all the way to the state semis.
Sawyer said how they respond can be a key to the rest of their season.
It depends on how you respond to it, if you respond bad to it, it can cost you the season and if you respond good to it, it can elevate you,” he said.
Grant Sweeney made his debut at quarterback and completed 21 of 30 passes for 278 yards and one TD, with no interceptions.
Callen Combs finished with 74 rushing yards and Jeff Morrison tallied 80 yards on 13 totes and scored three touchdowns.
Robert Estes led the defense with 10 tackles, Cash Gatlin had 9 stops and Kole Traylor added 7 tackles.
Comfort High
The Bobcats scored in every quarter and went on to defeat Brackett at home, 43-19.
The Tigers were up 7-0 but Comfort took over from there and scored 38 straight for the 38-7 lead by the end of the third quarter.
Comfort was up 15-7 at the halftime break and blew it open with three third-quarter touchdowns.
Jared Valadez, Omar Rivera, Gabriel Gonzalez, Jovani Zapata and Hunter Ledlow all tallied rushing touchdowns, while Gonzalez had a receiving touchdown from Rivera who was 4 for 8 through the air.
Cole Young led the defense with 16 tackles and Damian Neri tallied 10 TDs.
Comfort visits Dilley Friday. The Wolves also won their opener over Sabinal, 47-23.
Like they do with Brackett, the Bobcats usually have Dilley on their non-district schedule and Comfort coach Jay Rieken said he likes what the Wolves bring to the table.
“Dilley looks good, and they always have a good game plan going into our game,” he said. “They’re well coached and I like playing them because their kids are aggressive and play hard.
“It’ll be a physical game and will show us where we’re at this early in the season,” Rieken said.
Geneva School of Boerne
The Eagles held off a late Lions’ charge to defeat San Antonio Christian, 28-21.
Geneva used a two-quarterback approach in the game and played Caleb Quitadamo and Bryce Hanover at the QB spot, and both did well as they combined for 360 yards and three touchdowns through the air.
Quitadamo went 13 for 23 for 155 yards with a touchdown and a pick, while Hanover completed 9 of 16 passes for 205 yards and two TDS and an interception.
Brady Chandler caught 7 passes for 182 yards and a score, Reid Aderholt snagged 6 passes for 68 yards and a TD, Shae McNew caught two passes for 25 yards and a touchdown.
McNew also led the ground game with 86 yards on 18 totes and a score.
Chandler and Hanover both tallied 6 tackles, while Sam Horton came up with 5 stops.
The Eagles are on the road for the second straight game and visit La Pryor, which beat the Uvalde JV, 28-18, after a change in the schedule. Since it was against a JV team, it didn’t count as an official win and they enter Friday’s game at 0-0.
Eagles coach Bob Rosenstiel said La Pryor plays with a lot of energy.
“They are a strong physical team,” he said. “They play aggressively to the ball and we have to match that intensity.”
