Chargers take first place at Long Creek meet

Boerne Champion continued its cross-country season last Saturday and raced at the new high school in New Braunfels – Long Creek.

There were only six teams in the 5A-6A division, and the Chargers dominated after the varsity teams took first in the girls and boys races.

Champion is scheduled to run at the Canyon meet this weekend at Starcke Park.

Varsity Boys

The Champion boys almost ran a perfect race after they took first place with 17 points. A perfect race is five runners from one school capturing the top five spots for 15 points.

Champion’s first five went 1-23-5-6, while its final two scoring runners were 11th and 15th.

Buda Johnson (73) was second in the team standings and Buda Hays (75) was third in the field of six teams.

Titus Gill of SA Home School won the race but since he’s not part of a full team, they removed his place from the adjusted team scoring.

In that case, Shawn Edwards was second overall but first in the adjusted team scoring. Edwards came in at 16:25, Sebastian Carvallo was one spot back in 16:40.49 and Noah Moreno finished third at 16:40.67 as the Chargers went 1-2-3.

Mason Nelson placed fifth in the adjusted team scoring after he clocked in at 16:47, Brandon Martinez finished in 16:48 for sixth, Adan Valdez recorded a 17:19 for 11th and Abhiram Bhogireddy was 15th at 17:47. Pierce Mitchell finished 20th in 17:53 and Hector Canales turned in a 19:08 for 42nd.

Varsity Girls

The Lady Chargers tallied 29 points to win the race in the field of six teams. Steele (49) took second and Buda Johnson (58) was third.

For the Lady Chargers, Rebecca Bezerra finished second with a time of 19:23, Emma Radtke was one spot back in third at 19:46, Luciana Zazueta Ibarra clocked in at 20:44 for eighth, Abigail Alger placed ninth with a 20:52 and Elana Duran posted a 20:55 for 10th as Champion’s five scoring runners all placed in the top 10.

Also, Anorah Cerean came in 23rd in adjusted scoring at 21:51 and Catherine Whitman was 26th in 22:05 to round out the team.
