CASTROVILLE – Boerne Champion played great complimentary football Friday at Medina Valley, especially in the fourth quarter with the outcome still up in the air.
The Chargers offense and defense both did their parts to turn the Panthers away in that final period and help the team stay unbeaten at 2-0 with a 48-21 win in Castroville.
Even though Boerne Champion registered a 27-point win over Medina Valley, the victory wasn’t secured until the Chargers turned in a solid fourth quarter to get the separation they needed from the pesky Panthers.
Champion receiver Brogan Dempsey did his part as he hauled in four TD passes in the game and had one in the fourth quarter on a throw from Julian Navarette, while the Chargers defense came up with three fumble recoveries in the period.
The Chargers were up 31-14 at the half but Medina Valley started the third quarter with an impressive 84-yard, 16-play drive that chewed 9 minutes off the clock and cut the lead to 10 at 31-21 with 15 minutes left in the contest.
Champion responded and used the final three minutes of the third to get into field-goal range. The Chargers opened the fourth quarter with a 41-yard Carter Thompson field goal for a little breathing room at 34-21 early in the stanza.
Charger Zachary Garcia added to the lead after Ryder Flugence stripped a Panthers ball carrier on their second play from scrimmage in the fourth quarter.
Garcia scrambled in from 23 yards and Champion pulled ahead 41-21.
On the next Panthers’ possession, it was Alexander Sansone’s turn to come up with a fumble recovery at the Medina Valley 34 to give Champion another short field.
A few plays later, Caleb Farias ripped off a 21-yard run to set up Champion at the Panthers’ 9. From there, Dempsey hauled in his fourth TD of the night from Navarette, and it turned into a blowout at 48-21.
With under two minutes on the clock, Ethan Nguyen recorded the third fumble recovery of the quarter for the Chargers defense to seal the victory.
Champion has a short week and is home Thursday to face Laredo Alexander at Boerne ISD Stadium, 7 p.m., to wrap up non-district action.
The Chargers open district play Sept. 19 at home against the defending 5A DI state champions Smithson Valley.
