The ancient Romans knew how to throw a party. After a great military victory, they had a huge parade. Legions marched through the city, along with prisoners, vanquished enemies and even wild animals from distant lands. The commanding general was hailed for his leadership as the people cheered him, the conquering hero.
But there were two men in the general’s chariot: the general and a slave. The slave had one job, a single purpose; he repeatedly spoke into the general’s ear: “All glory is fleeting.”
