More than 6,000 fans were on hand Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium to watch the Greyhounds defeat Medina Valley on Homecoming night, 44-20.
BHS coach Brett Sawyer said it was a great night for his team that improved to 2-1.
“It’s a great crowd and a great community,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier with the turnout and the support.”
Because of Medina Valley’s ground-control offense that likes to chew up clock, the Greyhounds only had the ball three times in the first half, but they managed to score all three times for the 22-6 at halftime.
Sawyer said getting a lead on the Panthers is a key to beating them.
“They’re good at it and they’re efficient and that’s the point of their offense, to keep you off the field,” he said. “You try to get up on them so you can get them in a position where they have to take chances, that’s what you try to do.”
And that’s what the Greyhounds did. Callen Combs capped Boerne’s opening drive with an 11-yard run, Grant Sweeney scrambled in from 22 yards and then Sweeney plunged in from the Panthers’ 1-yard line and the Greyhounds took a 22-6 into halftime.
Medina Valley held the ball for 8:14 on its first drive and came up empty after the BHS defense stuffed them on 4th and 2.
The Panthers next drive went 7:19 but this time they finished it with a touchdown from Dezerian Wright, but missed the extra point.
Once the second half started, Sweeney helped the Hounds open up a 29-6 lead with his third rushing touchdown of the night, this one a 77-yard sprint to the end zone.
“He might be the fastest kid on our team and people don’t see that,” Sawyer said.
Just when it looked like Boerne was going to break it open, the Panthers scored a TD on an 87-yard sweep from Connor Crisp. On Boerne’s next possession, Medina Valley came up with an interception at the BHS 23 and capitalized on the short field.
Four plays later, QB Xavier Gonzales tallied a TD on an 8-yard run. Suddenly, the BHS lead was down to 29-20 after the Panthers had tallied 14 points in a 1:40 by late in the third quarter.
“It’s a roller coaster and they caught us at a low point,” Sawyer said. “We were able to get our minds right and fix it.”
The Greyhounds fixed it by having Will Traylor catch a 55-yard touchdown pass from Sweeney and it was 37-20. In the middle of the fourth quarter the lead ballooned to 44-20 after Sweeney found Zach Freasier on a 23-TD strike to put it out of reach with only 4:43 left.
Boerne’s defense played shutout ball in the fourth quarter and kept the Panthers off the board in the final stanza to wrap it up.
The Greyhounds visit East Central Friday as they close out non-district play.
