Bobcats off to best start since 2020

The Comfort High football team is off to its best start since 2020 after defeating Ingram Tom Moore last Friday to start the year at 3-0.

Comfort was trailing at one point last Friday, 22-7, but went on to outscore the Warriors, 40-13, to notch the 47-35 win.

CHS has 25 players on its roster and almost half – 14 of them – are seniors and Bobcats coach Jay Rieken said their leadership is showing, especially in games like last Friday.

“Our seniors that played last year and the experience they bring is a key,” he said.

Comfort’s 2020 team started the year at 6-0 before suffering their first loss and this group is halfway there. The Bobcats are in a small district and still have three more non-district contests on the schedule before opening district and could catch that 2020 squad.

Rieken said they’re just focused on the game ahead and want to improve each week. He added that there are a lot of areas to improve on.

“We need to reduce the number of penalties we get,” he said. “We also need to start games faster and execute better offensively.”

The Bobcats had a slow start Friday and gave up a safety and a had Ingram score on a fumble and were trailing 9-0 early. They were behind 22-7, but once they got their footing, the Bobcats scored five straight touchdowns to pull ahead 40-22 before winning it.

Comfort wants to keep that momentum going into this Friday’s home game against Johnson City.

Johnson City is 2-1 and has won two straight after dropping its opener to Granger (49-34). They bounced back to beat Sonora (2212) and Miles (49-6).

Rieken said the Eagles can score as noted by the 49 points they’ve recorded.

“They run the ball well and put up a lot of points,” he said. “Their defensive line is quick and they’re consistent in aligning their linebackers. They have size and speed.”

Comfort can run the ball as well and has been led by different players over the last few weeks. This past week Hunter Ledlow ran for 183 yards on 10 carries and scored three times to lead the ground game.

Carter Pape added 114 rushing yards on 10 totes, and Gabriel Gonzalez also punched in a TD.

Omar Rivera completed 6 of 10 passes for 128 yards and a score, while Damian Neri hauled in 2 passes for 27 yards and a TD.

Neri led the defense and finished with 15 tackles, while Rivera came up with 2 interceptions and Ledlow also had a pick.
