The BHS football team has won two in a row, and the Greyhounds look to keep the momentum going when they visit East Central for a road game to close out non-district.
Boerne (2-1) and the Hornets (1-2) kickoff Friday, 7:30 p.m.
While East Central is 1-2, they have played some pretty stiff competition. They lost to Harlan (48-40), beat Roosevelt (43-13) and fell to Clark (26-23).
The Hornets went three rounds deep into the playoffs in 2024, their deepest postseason run since 1985. They graduated 17 starters from the team, but Boerne coach Brett Sawyer said they’ll still have a lot of talent.
“They’re very athletic and have great skill kids,” he said.
In last week’s homecoming win, it looked like the Greyhounds were going to wrap up the win early after pulling head, 29-6, but two touchdowns by the Panthers in a span of 1:40 made it a game again.
Medina Valley scored a TD and then recovered a fumble at the Boerne 23 and took advantage of the short field and tacked on another touchdown for 14 quick points and it was 29-20 with 17 minutes left in the game.
“We turned it over and you can’t turn the ball over against a good team,” Sawyer said. “Luckily, we were able to get our minds right and fix it.”
Sawyer said it’s part of the process of getting better. He noted that they aren’t a finished product and need to improve during non-district and even through district play. The Greyhounds open district action next Friday against Alamo Heights.
“We still need to get better in our overall execution,” Sawyer said. “We’re still too sloppy in some of our base plays.”
After Medina Valley trimmed the lead to 9 points, Boerne’s defense didn’t allow another point, while the offense tacked on two more scores to put the contest away.
Greyhounds QB Grant Sweeney threw to Zach Freasier and Will Traylor to get those two scores, but Sweeney showed off his running ability and ran for touchdowns of 22, 1 and 77 yards. Only the 1-yard plunge was a play designed for him to run.
On the other two scores that went for 99 combined yards, Sweeney dropped back to pass but since nothing was there, he bolted and didn’t stop until he found the end zone.
“He might be the fastest kid on our team and people don’t see that,” Sawyer said.
Sweeney led all rushers last Friday with 127 yards on 8 carries.
Defensively, Kole Traylor and Diego Jimenez came up with fumble recoveries, while Cash Gatlin had a memorable night and finished with 17 tackles.
Rory Hotchkin and Kole Traylor recorded 13 tackles each; Blake Burkholder finished with a dozen tackles and Cooper Thompson added 11 tackles.
NOTES: Boerne defensive lineman Braydon Eavenson was named homecoming king Friday night. Ayden Long was voted homecoming queen.
