Crazy things can happen when two rivals meet and that appears to be the case Friday when the Boerne Champion volleyball team hosted Boerne High Friday at Charger Gym.
Champion entered the match undefeated in 26-5A action at 4-0, while Boerne High was 1-4, but it was the Lady Greyhounds team that emerged with the upset victory.
The Chargers took the first set, 27-25, but the Boerne girls bounced back to win the final three sets, 26-24, 25-22, 25-22, in a match that started at 5 p.m. because it was homecoming night for the Greyhounds.
Boerne is 17-8 overall and 2-4 in district, while the Lady Chargers are 19-3 overall and 4-1 in district. The Lady Hounds hosted Alamo Heights Tuesday, while Champion visited Pieper.
BHS coach Staci Lawrence said the key to the win was consistency.
“I think we played a consistent match throughout all four sets,” she said. “We kept the energy up, made some gritty plays both defensively and offensively and didn’t let our low points swing our energy in a negative direction.”
One thing the Greyhounds did well was never let the Chargers get too far ahead. Champion had a fast start in Game 1 and was up 8-3, but a BHS timeout slowed them down.
Boerne answered with a 4-0 run, and it was 8-7 and the Hounds kept it close from there. BHS even pulled ahead 21-17 and was up 24-23 in that first set.
The Lady Chargers tied it from there at 24-24 and it was tied again at 25-25 before Champion scored the final two points.
The Lady Greyhounds had their own fast start in the second game and went up 4-0 and forced the Chargers to play catch-up.
Champion tied it at 12-12 and it was tied again at 13s, 17s, 18s, 22s and 23s. Boerne went up 24-23 and forced a Chargers timeout.
Champion came out of the break and tied it at 24s for the seventh tie, but Boerne scored the final two points for the 26-24 win to even it up.
While the first two sets went beyond 25 points, that wasn’t the case in the final two sets as the Lady Greyhounds won them both by identical scores.
It’s Boerne’s first win in the series after the Chargers swept them last year and Lawrence said it’s one her players will remember for a while.
“I’m sure it will be one that they will recall for many years to come,” she said. “It was even more special to win on their senior homecoming night as well.”
The second-round 26-5A matchup between the BISD volleyball teams will take place Oct. 14 at Greyhound Gym, 6:30 p.m.
