Boerne scored 49 points Friday to cruise past East Central on the road, improving to 3-1 with the 49-7 win.
It was all three phases contributing to the lopsided win as the passing attack was clicking, the defense forced turnovers, and special teams came alive.
The passing attack was led by junior quarterback Grant Sweeney, finding three different wideouts for touchdowns, totaling four touchdowns through the air.
Sweeney was also effective using his feet to put points on the board, scoring twice on-the-move.
Coming into this game, the Hornets made a concerted effort to establish its ground game and use physical play against the Greyhounds.
The Hounds’ defensive line was prepared to match the physicality, swarming to the ball and allowing minimal explosive plays from the ground.
Being tough and stout is a point of emphasis for head coach Brett Sawyer to develop his team for match ups like these.
“We try to instill in them, being tough and playing hard,” said Sawyer. “When we have control of the line of scrimmage, we feel good about that.”
It was in the trenches where the defense made its mark. Senior linebacker Hadden Silva came away with a pick-six interception for the score, increasing the deficit to 42-7 in the fourth quarter.
Special teams for the ‘Hounds forced miscues for the Hornets, recovering a muffed kick-off return and putting the offense in good position to score.
The victory for the ‘Hounds was not smooth sailing from the start, as the first few possessions in the first quarter, the Greyhounds had two drops, an offensive penalty and interception.
Things started to clean up a bit for Boerne in the second quarter as Sweeney got into a rhythm, leading the Greyhounds into halftime with a 14-7 lead.
Knowing there were missed opportunities and sloppy play, Sawyer had a simple message to his team to do their job and good things will follow.
“Quit worrying about everybody else and worry about everything what we’re supposed to be doing on our play, execute that to the best we can do,” Sawyer said. “When everyone executes the way they’re supposed to, then good things can happen on that play.”
The Greyhounds return home Friday to face Alamo Heights, looking to capture their fourth win of the season.
