Eagles travel to Schertz to face JP II in district opener

The Geneva School of Boerne football team closed out the non-district portion of its schedule last Friday with a costly loss to Cypress Christian, 62-50.

It was costly because the Eagles lost a couple of starters in the contest that might have made a difference in the outcome. One is expected back next week, while the other is out for a spell.

Eagles coach Bob Rosenstiel said the younger players need to embrace the opportunities they’ll be given.

“Our mindset is always ‘next man up,’” he said. “This is prime opportunity for a young player to step up and fill a needed role for us.”

Geneva (3-1) opens league play Friday on the road at Schertz John Paul II. The Eagles had won their first three games before getting tripped up by Cypress Christian last week in the shootout.

Rosenstiel said non-district flew by and added that he likes where the team is as they head into league play.

“I think in a lot of ways the team has exceeded my expectations,” he said. “That being said, we still have a long way to go in order to play clean football.”

John Paul II is struggling and sits at 1-3 with their only win coming to St. Anthony, 28-22. The Guardians were defeated last week by Eastside Early College, 56-6.

JP II will look to keep the ball on the ground with the Slot-T offense, according to Rosenstiel.

“They have a new head coach that installed a new system for them. They get better each week as they get comfortable with their coach and system,” he said. “The Slot-T offense is hard to defend, and it’s not run by many teams. There will be a lot of teaching this week.”

While the Eagles will run the ball, they don’t mind airing it out either. Geneva QB Caleb Quitadamo went 23 for 39 and 354 yards and 5 TDs.

Reid Aderholt and Chase Doran both caught 7 passes apiece, with Aderholt totaling 138 yards and 2 TDs, while Doran went for 130 yards and 3 scores.

Shae McNew ran for 125 yards on 11 carries and had a touchdown, while Quitadamo rushed 15 times for 56 yards and a score as the Eagles tallied 203 yards on the ground to go with 354 through the air for 557 total yards in the loss, while Cypress Christian was right at 500 yards in the game.

Koen Huebner led the team defensively with 9 tackles, while Doran added 7 stops.
