The Boerne High football team opens district action Friday and gets a tough one right out of the gate as they host Alamo Heights.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Greyhounds and the Mules were put into the same district last year for the first time in more than a decade and both teams have won a lot of league games during that span.
Alamo Heights hasn’t lost a district game since 2019, when they fell to Boerne Champion at BISD Stadium in a district game on Nov. 8, 2019.
Boerne fell to the Mules last year at Orem Stadium (35-28) and hadn’t suffered a district loss before that since Nov. 7, 2019, the day before the Mules lost.
This will be Brett Sawyer’s first time facing Alamo Heights as the Greyhounds head coach and Sawyer said he’s excited about it.
“This is my eighth year here and during that time our rivalry was with other schools, and now it’s with Alamo Heights,” he said. “There’s a history with Boerne and Alamo Heights and it’s a cool thing to be part of, it’s a lot of fun. They’re a lot like us and it’s a good match up for both of us. It’s always going to be a good game.”
After a season-opening loss to Pieper, the Greyhounds have reeled off three straight wins and defeated Laredo United, Medina Valley and East Central.
Against East Central, it was tied 7-7 and Boerne only held a 14-7 lead at halftime, but the Greyhounds outscored the Hornets in the second half, 35-6, to win 49-13.
Sawyer said he likes how his team has improved each week but knows they can’t stop improving.
“I think we’ve gotten better each week, but there is stuff to grow on, we’re never going to be where I want us to be, but we’re firing on a lot of cylinders right now,” he said. “I think we should be further along but we’re learning, and I love where we’re at. I think we’re in a pretty good spot.”
While the Greyhounds continue to improve, would Sawyer have preferred to face the Mules later in the season? No, not really.
“The order doesn’t matter much to me, I’m focused on getting us better and everything we can control and our mentality,” he said. “We’re going to have to play them at some point.”
Boerne’s defense will have their hands full trying to stop DK Garza. The talented back is already closing in on 1,000 rushing yards this year.
Garza had a career night against Churchill and ran for 368 yards and six touchdowns against the Chargers. He has tallied 930 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns so far this year.
Sawyer said they’ll do their best to slow down Garza but knows it’s a tall order.
“You try to play technique the best you can,” he said. “You have to be sound defensively and we have to put ourselves in a position to make tackles.”
Against the Hornets, BHS quarterback Grant Sweeney was 18 for 27 through the air for 334 yards and 4 TDs against 1 pick.
Sweeney also led the ground game with 82 yards on 7 carries and 2 touchdowns.
Zach Freasier caught 4 passes for 82 yards and 2 TDs, Will Traylor snagged a team-high 9 passes for 205 yards and a score, while Eli Nikolas hauled in 3 passes for 48 yards and a TD.
Defensively, CJ Smith and Hadden Silva both intercepted passes, while Cooper Thompson caused a fumble and Kepano Kanae recovered it.
Thompson led the team in tackles with 13, Silva added 8 stops, while Cash Gatlin and Blake Burkholder came up 7 tackles apiece.
