Bobcats put perfect record on the line against 3A power Llano

Comfort High takes its 4-0 record into Friday’s home football contest against Llano and while the Bobcats are undefeated, injuries are starting to take their toll.

CHS only has 24 players on the team and a lot of them play on both sides of the ball. That’s just the way it is at the 3A level where athletes play ironman football.

Comfort coach Jay Rieken said his team is doing the best they can. They lost two more players last week; one, a JV player who was going to get called up, is out for the year and Rieken isn’t sure about the other’s return.

“Up until this past week, we’ve been good,” he said. “We’re entering the midway point of the season, and every team is hurting. We’ve had bumps and bruises, but the kids are upbeat and looking through it. It’s the next man up mentality.”

The 4-0 Bobcats are going to need every hand on deck Friday when they host 3-1 Llano. The Yellowjackets suffered their first loss of the season last week to Jarrell, but before that, they had tallied 55, 62 and 50 points to start the year 3-0.

Rieken said Llano is always good.

“They’re big, fast and physical and they do everything well,” he said. “We hope to make them one-dimensional and slow them down and stay in the game.”

Llano can score, but so can the Bobcats. Comfort enters Friday’s contest having tallied 43, 35, 47 and 49 points for an average of 43.5 per contest.

One thing the Bobcats do well is make timely passes. They don’t throw the ball a lot but when they do, they’re effective.

Comfort QB Omar Rivera has tossed at least one touchdown in every game but hasn’t thrown more than 10 times in a contest. Rieken said they prefer to run but will take what the defense is giving them.

“We try to run the ball to set up the pass, but when they start creeping up, we try to take advantage of it,” the coach said.

While a lot of the other schools have started district or will be starting this weekend, Comfort still has two more non-district games, this Friday’s contest against Llano and next week they’ll visit Bandera to close out non-district before starting district on Oct. 17 after a bye week.

Rieken said he’s fine with the schedule and added that he’s proud of their 4-0 start.

“I love everything the kids have done to this point; we’re starting to put it together. We need to eliminate mistakes and decrease penalties and get more physical,” he said. “It’s always good to win, we knew they had it in them, they won their games in different fashions. They’re great young men and do everything we asked and they play hard.”
