COMFORT — Comfort put their undefeated streak on the line on Friday against Llano at Bobcat Stadium. While it was a game effort, the Bobcats (4-1) were unable to get on track offensively and were ultimately upended by the Yellowjackets (4-1) by a final score of 40-0.

The teams each stalled out on their first few offensive series, with the defenses proving stout for both. Comfort would force the first turnover of the game on an interception by senior linebacker Jovani Zapata.

The stingy Llano defense would not bend, however, and would force Bobcat junior quarterback Omar Rivera to throw his first interception of the season, which the Yellowjackets returned deep into Comfort territory.

Llano would convert the mistake into the game’s first score with less than a minute left in the first quarter. The Yellowjackets added another score on their next possession at the start of the second quarter and would start to pull away behind a strong running game.

“Our defense played lights out,” Comfort head coach Jay Rieken said. “We had a good game plan, and our guys executed really well what we asked them to do. They had them figured out, we just don’t have very many kids out there and [Llano] can just wear you down.”

The Yellowjackets forced Rivera’s second interception on the night in the second quarter, and Llano would take the second back for a pick-six touchdown. The Yellowjackets would miss the extra point to take a 20-0 lead into halftime. Rivera would leave the game late in the fourth due to injury.

“Offensively, we just didn’t execute very well,” Rieken said. “We got beat in the trenches and we need to run the ball and they took that away from us. We’ve got to get better up front.”

After receiving the ball in the second half, Comfort stalled out in their first offensive possession. The defense would again be asked to step up to stop the Llano attack. They would ultimately be worn down by an unrelenting Llano offense, as the Yellowjackets added another score late into the third quarter. Llano tacked on another touchdown late in the fourth quarter to seal the proverbial deal.

“They’re a really good ball club,” Rieken said. “We’re just a little bummed up right now. When you’re suiting up 23 (players) on a Friday night, it’s rough. The kids don’t come off the field. A good, big, fast, physical team can wear you down.”

Comfort will wrap up their non-district schedule with a road matchup against the Bandera Bulldogs at Bulldog Stadium on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
